No sport around the world unites people like politics. But it needs an actual sport to kill the occasional boredom in politicians who have been thrust into a political maelstrom — all the way from Karnataka to Delhi. Well, what better than the gentleman’s game — cricket! The lush green lawns of the the ITC Grand Bharat in Gurugram today had the pleasure of hosting a few bored BJP MLAs from Karnataka who were spotted playing cricket.Watch the video here.As the political cyclone in Karnataka made a landfall in Delhi, the BJP earlier in the day flew its 104 MLAs to the capital and holed them up in a resort in neighbouring Gurugram. The Congress-JD(S) and the BJP in Karnataka are locked in a new battle, each accusing the other of trying to poach their MLAs.While the BJP has accused the HD Kumaraswamy-led government of trying to split the saffron party ranks, Congress earlier claimed that five of its lawmakers went “missing” and accused the BJP of launching another “Operation Lotus” — a term coined in 2008, when the BJP was accused of inciting opposition MLAs to defect to ensure the Yeddyurappa government’s stability. In the 224-member Karnataka assembly, the JDS-Congress combine has 118 MLAs while the BJP has 104.Coming back to the MLAs enjoying a game of cricket, it’s difficult to gauge from the video if somebody actually scored any runs or got a wicket. But when it comes to our politcians, the doors for sledging are sure to remain open, both in Karnataka and the national capital.advertisementALSO READ | Karnataka crisis LIVE: 2 Independents, including flip-flop Shankar, withdraw from Congress-JD(S) govtALSO WATCH | Is BJP plotting to destabilise Karnataka govt?

Kolkata: The junior doctors have cancelled their proposed Lalbazar march on Tuesday after the police arrested two main accused ~ Seikh Tabir and Md Nizamuddin, who were involved in the assault on some junior doctors at NRS Medical College and Hospital in June, during which two junior doctors had sustained critical injuries. The junior doctors on Monday said that they cancelled the Lalbazar march after the police took decisive action in arresting the two main accused who were behind the attack at NRS. Also Read – Bengal family worships Muslim girl as Goddess Durga in Kumari PujaThey also said that they have responded to the appeal of the Director General of police (DGP) Virendra, who sought 10 days time to take action against the other culprits involved in the NRS incident. The decision was announced after a general body meeting at the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital on Monday afternoon. Incidentally, it may be mentioned that on Sunday the junior doctors had threatened of a march to Lalbazar. “Following our agitation from June 10 to 17, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee gave us some assurances during her meeting at Nabanna. Many of her assurances have been translated into action, while some of her assurances are yet to be fulfilled. During a meeting with the DGP on July 27, he told us that positive steps would be taken against all the accused in the NRS incident,” a junior doctor said. Also Read – Bengal civic volunteer dies in road mishap on national highwayHe further stated: “We came to know on Monday morning that the two main accused have been arrested and remanded in police custody till August 9. Around 15 persons were involved in the attack on the junior doctors, which is also evident from the CCTV footages of the hospital.” “We also wanted to know from the DGP what progress has been made in connection with the two separate incidents of attack on the junior doctors at Burdwan Medical College and Hospital and Burdwan Dental College and Hospital. We were told that five persons have been arrested in connection with the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital incident and three in connection with the Burdwan Dental College incident,” said the junior doctor. He added: “As we have seen considerable amount of progress in all these cases, we have taken a unanimous decision not to go for agitation, therefore cancelling the Lalbazar march on Tuesday. We have responded to the appeal of the DGP where he sought cooperation from us.” The junior doctors also said that they would hold a general body meeting at NRS Medical College and Hospital later in the day, where they would talk to the victim doctors who received severe injuries during the assault and remained under treatment for a long time. They also threatened to organise a mass protest opposing the National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill, 2019.
VANCOUVER, B.C. — Drivers in the Lower Mainland are feeling the effects of chronic fuel supply constraints as prices crest $1.50 a litre in some locations, hovering close to record highs. And at least one analyst believes they could climb further still.“It underscores the real big problem in southwestern British Columbia and that’s that they’re chronically short of gasoline and other fuels,” said GasBuddy senior petroleum analyst Dan McTeague, who believes prices will rise even higher. The current spike, in a season of generally lower demand, is caused in part by the outage of a Burnaby, B.C., refinery that Parkland Fuel bought from Chevron in November, he said. The 55,000 barrel-a-day refinery, which McTeague says supplies about a quarter of demand in the region, has been down for planned maintenance since early February and the company doesn’t expect to have it fully running again until the end of March.Still, the region faces longer-standing supply issues that could push prices in the higher-demand summer months to surpass the previous record of $1.56 in June 2014, said McTeague.Prices increases could also come as two of four refineries in Washington State are planning to go down for maintenance, while the lower Canadian dollar is adding to the costs of buying fuel from the U.S., McTeague said.High taxes are also compounding the problems, making up 49.3 cents out of the 150.9 cent price per litre seen Wednesday with another 1.2 cent per litre carbon tax coming in April, he said.“It’s not looking good for that region of the country,” he said. “There’s no spare supply out there, we could see $1.60 for a few days this summer in Vancouver.” While gas prices could see upward pressure across the country as oil prices maintain some gains, McTeague said the Lower Mainland issues are much worse. As Vancouver drivers were paying as much as $1.50 a litre Thursday, pump prices were about $1.09 in Calgary and around $1.24 in Toronto, according to data from Kent Group Ltd.
New York – In the late twentieth century, there was a popular saying among many business owners and professionals that went, “It’s not what you know, but who you know.” This saying has never been more true since the advent of the Internet. Communications have become more essential in everyday business practices thanks to online networking. Many entrepreneurs, such as Ehsan Bayat of Afghan Wireless, continue to expand the possibility of communication networks even in the most remote areas. How can the development of information technology benefit the future world of business?1. Sending DocumentsIn the past, it could take days to receive letters and/or business correspondences by mail. Many business owners even paid for next-day delivery of important documents. In today’s market, those documents can be sent via email almost instantaneously. Whether these forms are stored on a local server, in the Cloud, or on a smartphone, people can now share these documents in a much faster and affordable manner. According to many business owners, the days of spending $20 to $30 for next-day air are numbered. 2. Marketing ShiftsMany small businesses may not be able to afford televised advertisements. However, nearly one-third of these companies utilize paid online marketing. In many ways, online marketing can be more valuable to the small business than a perfect spot on primetime television. These advertising methods may also be far less expensive than many local real-life alternatives.3. Social MediaOne of the most profound changes in the digital world has been that of social media. Since 2005, more and more people have been flocking to sites like Facebook and Twitter in order to stay connected with friends and family. Many business owners have seen the potential for engaging their audience and developed strategies for social marketing practices. Since approximately 10% of all online sales originate from these websites, the potential for income is extraordinary.4. Expanding Target ConsumersThe Internet gives business owners the opportunity to greatly increase their target audience without an excessively high marketing campaign. Companies in the smallest of towns may still access millions of people through online channels. This can include people living in nearby cities to those on the other side of the globe. It all centers around what kind of business you operate and how you can engage those consumers.5. Mobile Marketing ImprovementsOnline interactions are not the only things that have been affected by changes in information technology. The devices themselves offer potential to engage consumers as well. Many companies have invested heavily into mobile marketing platforms, with the majority of owners stating they will spend more in this area next year. This demonstrates how influential mobile devices have become for communication and enhancing sales.6. Productivity EnhancementsMany people have experienced the efficiency of online business practices. As such, developers are continuing to create the perfect Internet-based platform for various organizations. Nearly every aspect of almost any business can be controlled through the Cloud. The Cloud and other enhancements like it increases productivity, as employees and other workers can work from virtually anywhere. Online tools and applications play a significant role for online freelance professionals or employees who work from home.7. Professional Social NetworkingPrior to the development of the Internet, creating a professional network required a great deal of legwork and phone calls. Today, people can meet and interact on sites such as LinkedIn. Professional Social Networking has incredible potential for creating a vast professional network, allowing people from around the world to intermingle without the need to travel.8. Greater Levels of OpportunityBusiness owners used to spend days searching for distributors and suppliers. Thanks to the Internet, these people can now spend an hour or two on sites like Google to find the products they’re looking for. This has the potential to greatly increase product availability, as well as reduce overall operational costs of a brick-and-mortar store. Organizations no longer have to settle for what’s available locally, since many suppliers can now ship across seas.9. Increasing RevenuesMany businesses offer online customers products through eCommerce sites while selling goods locally at the same time. In some cases, simple advertisements on company blogs have the potential to produce a steady revenue stream. Businesses small and large no longer have to rely on walk-in customers thanks to online methods. It’s like having a second store without the overhead costs.10. Disaster RecoveryHistory has demonstrated that disasters can come in any form. Many companies have been affected by storms, earthquakes, and man-made catastrophes. Information technology gives users the ability to recover from such disasters very quickly. In fact, it’s even possible for a company that had its physical store completely destroyed to continue functioning from someone’s garage. All that’s needed to do business is an Internet connection.Information technology is more than just the desktop computer system in your home or the smartphone that resides in your pocket. It’s an industry that encompasses virtually all digital modes of communication. Using services that are available today may greatly improve your business practices tomorrow. Keep your fingers on the pulse of technology and take advantage of the tools that work for your organization.Edited by Michael Joseph

By James Wright, Special to the AFRO, email@example.comSenate Democrats have improved their hiring of people of color but only slightly. The survey, “Diversity Among U.S. Senate Democratic Staff on June 30, 2018,” commissioned by Senate Democrats, showed only a slight increase in the number of non-White Democratic staffers across 49 Senate personal offices and 19 committees. Don Bell, director of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies Black Talent Initiative, praised the upper chamber’s Democrats for their efforts.Sixty-six percent of U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris’s staffers are people of color. (Courtesy Photo)“I applaud [U.S. Senator Chuck] Schumer and the Senate Democratic Caucus for releasing an update of their demographic data,” Bell said. “The data makes it clear that after more than a year of actions taken to address diversity and inclusion, the Senate needs additional help. The lack of diversity and inclusion is an institutional crisis, which severely diminishes the Senate’s ability to effectively represent the views and needs of all Americans.”In the Senate’s Democratic personal offices, 29 reported an increase in the number of staff who identify as non-White, 16 reported a decrease and four remained unchanged. The survey showed that in more than half of these offices, the change was not substantial, meaning less than five percent. In the 19 Senate committees, eight committees increased the number of staffers of color, seven saw a decrease and four remained unchanged and there was no substantial change in that category either. The survey pointed out that many staffers of color for Democratic senators were mainly in junior level positions and not in the power staff positions such as chief of staff, legislative director and communication director or even influential mid-level positions like deputy chief of staff, deputy legislative director, legislative assistant, counsel and press secretary. For example, the survey pointed out that while 46 percent of Sen. Thomas Carper (D-Del.) staff consisted of people of color, none were in top or mid-level positions.Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) has a staff that is 66 percent people of color and her office has the most diversity among mid and senior level staff. The only Democratic senator with an African-American chief of staff is Doug Jones of Alabama. Harris and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) have Black legislative directors. No Democratic senator has a communications director who is a person of color and no committee directors are Black or Latino.Spencer Overton, president of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, said it is critical that people of color get mid-level positions in the Senate. “The mid-level positions are often feeder positions to the leadership positions,” Overton said. “Thus, a failure to hire, retain, and promote diverse mid-level staff perpetuates a lack of diversity among top staff in the future.”Former Congressional Black Caucus executive director Paul Brathwaite told the AFRO that while the numbers aren’t impressive “at least they are moving in the right direction.”“The numbers could be going in the other direction,” Brathwaite said. “At least progress is being made.”Key job-hunting skills such as good interview techniques and creating a solid resume should be used to get people in the pipeline for those jobs, he said. “Both parties need to improve their numbers,” Brathwaite said, “but the Democrats are willing to do that.”
